I visited a friend’s small town in Slovakia and was surprised and dismayed by the vestigial communist-era public address system that would bellow throughout the town twice a day (it was even more jarring, perhaps, since it was in Slovak!). I asked the citizens who lived through the revolution how they felt about the system, which merely broadcasts town events and the like now, and the consensus was that each time they heard the announcements they were reminded of communism’s fall.
Hopefully the same can someday be said of these.
